How Gen AI is Transforming Procurement – Insights from Forrester’s Jeffrey Rachemani

At Zycus Horizon Europe 2024, Jeffrey Rajamani, Senior Analyst at Forrester, delivered a compelling session on the transformative impact of Generative AI (Gen AI) on procurement. Drawing parallels between early scepticism of the Internet in 2000 and today’s discussions around Gen AI, Rajamani highlighted how AI is no longer a passing trend but an essential shift in procurement.

He outlined four major trends reshaping procurement:

  1.  ESG & Sustainability – Procurement plays a pivotal role in sustainable sourcing and ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
  2. Innovation & Cost Efficiency – AI enables procurement to drive supplier collaboration and product innovation rather than focusing solely on cost-cutting.
  3. Resilience & Risk Management – The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in supply chains, pushing procurement teams to enhance supplier diversification and adopt AI-driven risk mitigation strategies.
  4. Gen AI as a Game-Changer – Unlike traditional AI, Gen AI offers exponential gains in automation, decision-making, and supplier intelligence, allowing procurement teams to scale efficiency while reducing operational risks.
He emphasized that companies must act fast to integrate AI into their procurement strategies or risk falling behind. By leveraging supplier intelligence, predictive analytics, and autonomous procurement tools, organizations can achieve 10X improvements in productivity, cost savings, and risk reduction.
